The cyberpunk depictions of jacking your brain into the Matrix/network/whatever may be science fiction, but jacking your brain into a Higher State of Being is science fact. Dr. Michael Persinger of Laurentian University in Canada has done some remarkable work on the neurobiology of religion. He has identified a portion of the brain now popularly called “the God Spot” that can be reproducibly stimulated by electromagnetic fields to produce religious experiences like Mystic Presence of Others as well as Sense of Timeless Tranquility. In fact, Persinger believes that many historical religious and UFO experiences were caused by EM fields produced by earthquake activity – not to mention the spread of 20th Century clock radios on everybody’s nightstand. Now you can see for yourself what truth is out there. One of Persinger’s former students, Todd Murphy, is seeking research volunteers to participate in developing a home-based, PC-peripheral version of Persinger’s EM stimulation gear called Shakti which you can buy for $250 once you wade thru all of the pop-up disclaimers. Over one hundred participants have reported some pretty impressive experiences in Murphy’s program so far. Perhaps the meaning of life is coming your way in a mailbox near you…

I remember reading about this when that article first appeared in Wired. It’s amazing that there’s actually a real scientist doing research in this area. Not surprising that Persinger has to use his own money. I think that his findings go a long way to explaining previously unexplained phenomena, such as religious experiences and alien abduction. I have long thought that the latter could be explained by lucid dreaming, which would cause one to be aware of the sleep paralysis that accompanies the dream state. But Persinger’s work would also explain the sense of being surrounded by other beings, which many abductees report.
