A Quebec-based cult known as the Raelians, who believe that mankind was created in a lab by extraterrestrials 25,000 years ago, has told CTV that they have created the first human clone. Their company Clonaid, which was formed in 1997, says that after successfully implanting 10 cloned embryos, five pregnancies ended in miscarriage but the remaining five are doing well–with one due to be born in two weeks and the other four due in February.
The Raelians’ claim comes soon after that of Italian fertility specialist Dr. Severino Antinori, who claimed last month to have created a human clone, to be born in January. According to the Globa & Mail, however, Clonaid says it is willing to have its results reviewed by an outside party via blood tests to compare the DNA of mother and baby “right after birth” to confirm whether the offspring is a clone.
Most scientists believe that cloning a human is horribly unethical and irresponsible at this early stage in cloning technology, not just because of the high risks to the mothers, but also because animal clones are suspected of containing “flawed” DNA, which could lead to any number of physical or mental abnormalities.
