Initial articles in PLoS Biology (temporarily offline and being mirrored due to the tremendous number of server hits) are on a monkey that controls a robot arm via thought, discovering a new subspecies of of elephants, and gene expression in the malaria parasite.

I work for a more traditional science publisher (the Physical Review journals) and we’ve been watching what these folks are up to and cheering (if faintly) from the sidelines for quite a while – it’s good to see something actually come of it all. And the site does seem to be rather popular today! It’s conceivable this sort of openness in science will lead to some real, long-overdue, changes…

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that the individuals doing the reviewing for print journals are mostly tenured professors. Given that said reviewers are performing a service that would be done in the absence of print journals as part of the scientific process, I can see no justification for the exorbitant prices of print journals or even the continued existence of print journals. All government funded research should be freely available to the public…
