OK, this will be the last plug here on SciScoop about Firefly for a while til there’s some definite news on the movie – which hopefully will be very soon. Today is Browncoat Day, the self-proclaimed fan holiday celebrating the official release of the Firefly DVD set – best sci-fi series ever, great Christmas gift, yada yada yada. Hey, it’s all true, and there’s nothing more I can say. You can lead a spacesuited horse to frozen lunar water, but you can’t make him melt it and all that. See for yourself why blending sci-fi with westerns so beautifully distills the mythic essence of humans at the edge of civilization in a way that Star Trek never has.

CFQ magazine (formerly Cinefantastique) is publishing a Firefly episode guide in an upcoming newsstand issue which will be well worth watching for. Its episode guides and reviews of various sci-fi series over the years, especially its decades-long complete coverage and reviews of all 500+ Star Trek programs, are tops in the critical review field. Some of its spoiler-free interviews with Joss Whedon and Tim Minear about Firefly are being published online as a continuing series of articles. Here are the links to the first six: Part One is a general production overview; Part Two covers the episodes The Train Job and Bushwacked; Part Three covers the episodes Shindig and Safe; Part Four covers the episodes Our Mrs. Reynolds and Jaynestown; Part Five covers the episodes Out of Gas and Ariel, which are the two episodes where Firefly hit its stride and the fans knew they were watching something extrordinary; Part Six covers the episodes War Stories and Trash. Yet to come are online CFQ coverage of the remaining even better episodes, including the superlative Objects In Space, which gets my vote for The Best Hour Of TV Sci-Fi Ever Filmed – truly an existential delight for the discerning viewer. Of course, I haven’t seen the three unaired episodes (Trash, Heart of Gold and The Message) that are on the DVD yet, either.

I just can’t mention CFQ in passing without noting it also publishes the Femme Fatales magazine I have been known to buy, ahem, just for the (OK, brief) interviews. Like this one of my personal favorite Peta Wilson (who starred as Nikita and ranked #19 on the Femme Fatales “2003 Sexy 50″ List): “I had dinner with President Putin in Russia,” she says, “and that made me feel pretty good, because he said to me, `You’ve revolutionized the woman in Russia. You’re a big hero here. Women, they like you because you’re strong.’ That’s when I went, ‘Okay, I’m part of something.’”

Update [2003-12-10 10:24:17 by rickyjames]: OK, there’s lots of Firefly DVD reviews going up with the release of the set, and they’re all generally favorable, most extremely so. I think this one from DVD Talk is the one to read if you only read one…

I have never seen the Firefly series, but decided to see what all the hype is. I took rickyjames’ advise and made an advanced order at Suncoast for the Season One series. The advanced order cost $19.95 for the full set. Suncoast never phoned to tell me the order was in. When I phoned them, they could not locate my name and asked if I have a receipt. When, I arrived at the store they took my receipt and tried charging me the full price of $39.95. Only after I pointed out the receipt that stated the $19.95 price did they agree to the deal. It seems that either they underestimated the pre-order cost or that there is such a demand for the set that they are trying to get the full $39.95.

Suncoast made a big mistake with the $20 pre-order because they didn’t realize it was a 4 DVD set instead of a single one when they put down the prices on their holiday pre-order list. Over on the Firely fan boards there’s tale after tale of the fans going in to collect their preorder and Suncoast trying charge them $40. In every case Suncoast has apparently backed down when they see the preorder reciept paperwork, even when one fan hauled off a half-dozen sets at the $20 price.

Suncoast realizes what has happened now, so $20 Firefly sets are but a pleasant memory. I’m glad SciScoop was able to help spread the word on that! But if you missed the initial deal, fear not; read this review (same as the one in my UPDATE of this article) and then go ahead and mail order the set for $30-$35 or so – it’s still a bargain.

Jay, PLEASE drop us a line back here on what you think as an unbiased observer with no prior viewing experience of this series. I’m REALLY curious if you think Firefly is anywhere near as good as I’ve said it is or if I’ve just gone plumb off my rocker…

I had mine preordered from Amazon for MONTHS and it got shipped out yesterday.  I watched the tracking progress online…  and suddenly it was marked as delivered!  I was home all day.  It never came!  Now I don’t know where it is.  UPS either lost it or delivered it someplace else.  This is very upsetting.  Grr…

I am delighted with the Firefly DVD set. What a deal for $20. This is going to be a most enjoyable holiday season.

I never found it. However Amazon has agreed to send me another one. Sucks though, because I won’t get it until next week. There goes my weekend plans. *sigh*

Yes, Ricky, it’s as good as you’ve said it is. I had never ever heard of it until you mentioned it to me, but pre-ordered it from Amazon on your recommendation, (knowing that considering the demand, I could resell it easily there if I didn’t like it). I’ve now watched the first 3 of the 4 DVDs, and I think it’s great!

I guess I’ll have to add an appendix to my New Mythology of the Space Age series (the text for the online college course I used to teach on “Science Fiction and Space Age Mythology.”) If I were still teaching that course, Firefly would surely be a major topic of discussion.
