"Sci-Femme’s goal is to encourage women to use film to envision the future" says Katrina Drabkin, Executive Director of Cinefemme, the non-profit that presents the Sci-Femme curated film show. Films that explore global issues, the role of technology, changes in societies, environments and interpersonal relationships and futuristic fantasy all fall within Sci-Femme’s parameters.
"Sci-Femme wants submissions that explore past conceptions, misconceptions, unknowns and the possibilities of tomorrow," says Sirpa Nelson, Co-Founder of Cinefemme. "Sci-Femme highlights the need for woman to address the scientific & technological realities of her future." adds Nelson.
Homemade, experimental, and non-traditional techniques are encouraged. Sci-Femme is an opportunity to showcase works that document and acknowledge the intellect, wisdom and experience of women and girls. "Sci-Femme offers a broad playing field within which women may communicate visually to reveal their opinions on these subjects." says Heide Foley, Publicity & Sponsorship Director for Sci-Femme." Being heard is what Sci-Femme is about." Sci-femme will facilitate an acquisition and exchange of knowledge in the sciences, math, computer technology, and issues of the future.
Sci-Femme evolved from last year’s highly successful Cinefemme curated film show, Eco-femme. Eco-femme fused feminism and ecology with films by Penelope Andrews, Fabienne Bouville, Katrina Drabkin, Sandy Falby, Amy Hicks, Karen Lefcourt, Annie Mather, Meg McKinney, Nina Paley, Suzanne Twining, Alala Wakelin, Hue Walker, Lucy Weismann and Jenny Zhang.
