SciScoop Gets (Mildly) Slashdotted

Announcements Wednesday, January 21, 2004 . This is a SciScoop post by Ricky James

Hey, maybe 2004 is the year SciScoop will hit the big(ger) time! Sylvia’s lunar Helium-3 story got mentioned on a front-page Slashdot article (and the mention was by Slashdot editor Timothy, no less!) and since then we’ve been getting about a thousand hits per hour for a total of about 5000 extra visits in the day than we normally get. The Slashdot story now has 400+ comments – but Timothy had to be over here reading our comments first before he front-paged a Slashdot version of the He3 story to start their comment threads. That’s a Good Thing.

Update [2004-1-22 7:14:30 by rickyjames]: For the record, 10,300+ page hits Wed. and 7500+ Thurs. instead of our usual 2500-3000. Slashdotting is an amazing force of nature. So is Google News.

While we’re popping the champagne corks, let’s not forget the lady of the hour who posted the hot story. Thanks, Sylvia!!!

Well, I confess: I’ve found this site through slashdot too; never heard of it before.

But, seen the possibility that people here have had some considerable education (ok, ok, this is a mere presumption :-), and thus may have an old thesis lingering around…

I would invite people who still have their thesis or essay or other work they made in the past and shelved it untill now, to visit http://www.verbumvanum.org and if possible, send their work to that site, so that all can benefit from it.

We’ve been Slashdotted before, as well as Farked, Drudged and Googled, and I’ve always been impressed by how well our server has held up. Kudos to XLAN.

I’ve really been impressed by the quality of story postings and discussions here lately. Thank you, Ricky and Sylvia. It feels like SciScoop is approaching the critical mass needed for a successful online community. It’s wonderful to see such viewership and participation.

I think what’s different about this time is that Timothy not only linked to our article, HE MENTIONED AND LINKED TO THE MAIN SITE TOO. I think that’s the first time our front page has been linked to by any of the Big Ones, rather than just a link to a story of passing interest. I’m going to view it as a tip o’ the hat…but then, I’m easily excitable anyway.

Thanks for providing the platform, Ricky – and for your story featuring “Space and Human Survival.” I just checked my own site stats and hits are way up.
