Frequent SciScoop contributor Arthur P. Smith is now officially a published newspaper columnist! Today my local newspaper of The Huntsville Times published his book review of Coalescent by Stephen Baxter. I’ve read a few of Baxter’s other novels, particularly his Manifold series; they’re all pretty good. But not as good as AP’s review! Congratulations, dude! You’ve hit the middle Time (the NY Times would in fact be the big time) and as such, you’re now a living example that Reading SciScoop Pays!!!

You’re a real hypester ricky :-) Do you get the print version of the paper? gypsysoul promised to send a copy if I didn’t get one otherwise :-)
By the way, I must have forgotten to hit submit on a story I did this morning (I know I did at least preview it) – oops… elements 113 and 115 have been discovered by a group working at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia. The article is supposed to be in the February issue of Physical Review C, where my day job is… however, I think NY Times jumped the gun a bit this morning, because the Feb issue isn’t really out yet. The work was based on colliding americium with calcium nuclei though, and they seem to have gotten just a handful of atoms of 115. This seems to be better supported than the faked discovery of element 118 a few years back.

also… No matter how accessible anything is on-line, there’s nothing like seeing your writing in inky newsprint :-).
I wish your longer version of the review had been printed, but when you see the other reviews, you’ll notice that they’re all about the same length.
Condensing is difficult work. As DP mentioned to me recently, G.K. Chesterton once wrote a friend, “I’d have written you a shorter letter, but I didn’t have time.”
Great seeing your name in the LOCAL PRESS!

Short version is EXCELLENT! You did an exceptional job of paring down what was already
a fine piece of writing to fit the format for Times reviews.
