.
...HP has put out a press release detailiing their plans to be the first to build an inkjet printer for the eye. Lexmark and Epson are expected to follow suit. "We were looking at laser printers when Stanford first contacted us," said Lexmark, "so this quasi-inkjet technology has taken us by surprise."

HP has jumped into the lead with plans for a 5 mega-pixel color implant. The company plans to offer the implant as a losss leader, making money on the refills.

Epson was more specific about its plans to build the device. "We're exploring the option of using wi-fi to send messages to the device, so that on the bottom of the retina you'll see specially tailored advertising subtitles," said a spokesperson. "We've got to recoup our research and development costs some way."

...END JOKE...

Seriously, getting the eye to recieve a chemical signal seems easy enough, but getting it to recognize colors or even shades of gray I don't know about. Plus, the person getting the implant would have to train their eye to see all over again -- in other words, being able to recognize objects being projected onto the retina. I can see telescopic sight being done digitally, however. Nice idea, Stanford.

jon
