How to Load an Airplane in the Least Amount of Time

Potpourri Monday, December 12, 2005. Post by Chad

Using sophisticated mathematical modeling, researchers at the Ben-Gurion University in Israel have tested various seating plans. The quickest method is to use a strict, seat-by-seat method, but this is considered impractical. Yet two other schemes are more efficient than the standard “seating from the back” method utilized by most airlines. These are seating from the window towards the center and uncontrolled boarding (where there are no reserved seats and it’s first-come-first-serve).

United Airlines has started doing this …boarding passes are marked in “Zones” with window seats having the lower number. These then get called first…it does not seem to be noticeably faster.

By the way avoid window seats on United 767′s: the box for the games\Tv\etc… takes up almost one third of the leg space.
