This Week’s News
Would you wear the cardigan of a serial killer? (link2) – This scientist uses a simple test to show that most people are not strict rationalists.
Woman in coma plays tennis (link2) – “Brain scans of a woman who has been in a vegetative state for five months show her imagining playing tennis and responding to commands.”
Florida county plans to vaporize landfill trash – This power plant will use plasma arcs to vaporize 28 years worth of trash over the next 18 years. All of the byproducts will be utilized, generating power as well as slag that can be used for construction projects. We need more of these.
Men Smarter than Women, Scientist Claims – It all comes down to brain size, although the difference in IQ is a measly 3.6 points. Which goes to show that a statistically significant difference is not necessarily significant in the everyday sense.
Study uncovers ‘chimp cross code’ – Wild chimps have devised a method to safely cross roads that pass through their territory.
First Quantum Cryptographic Data Network Demonstrated – With all the emphasis on quantum computing, it’s easy to forget that quantum cryptography enables truly secure communication. Researchers have developed a working data network that uses quantum cryptography.
Lockheed Martin to build future moonship (link2, link3) – Lockheed has won the contract to build the crew exploration vehicle for Nasa’s moon project (and shuttle replacement). The proposal relies heavily on old technology from the shuttle and Apollo programs.
Carbon on ice – “CO2 levels are higher now than they have been at any time during the last 800,000 years. And they’ve been increasing faster than at time during the past 800,000 years.”
…And Stuff That’s Just Plain Interesting
Bird That Uses Cars as a Nut Cracker [VIDEO] – Crows have adapted to urban life in quite a pragmatic manner. This crow drops a nut over a pedestrian crosswalk, waits for a car to run over it (and crack it open), waits by the curb for the light to change, then walks out and eats the nut.
Birds of Paradise [VIDEO] – Birds of paradise attempting to attract mates. They neaten up their areas, and some of their displays are quite fascinating.

Woman in coma plays tennis link is very interesting. Shows there is still a lot to learn about the brain and how it functions.

The woman in question was not in a coma, she had emerged from a coma and entered a persistent vegatative state. It is very interesting research nevertheless, but the scientists who carried out the study and the reviewers of their paper in Science emphasise that the results should not be generalised because not all PVS patients are the same.
Additionally, although it is the same regions of the brain that are illuminated in the functional MRI scans, the degree of activity is much, much less in the PVS patient than in the volunteers.
I reported on this work in spectroscopynow.com last week and got some useful insights from Owen as to the significance of the work.

You’ll notice the title of the linked article (which I copy verbatim) says ‘coma’ while my explanatory text says ‘vegetative state.’ Sorry about the duplicate with your post–this one slipped by me.
