Cutlery can provide a rich lesson in crystallography and condensed-matter physics, according to University of Virginia’s Lou Bloomfield. Conventional forks, knives and spoons are usually made from steel (an iron-carbon alloy) with various trace elements in the mix. Bloomfield explains the crystal lessons to be learned here.
