“According to micropaleontologist Gerta Keller of Princeton University in Princeton, N.J., and her collaborators, their analysis of ancient marine-dwelling microorganisms, called foraminifera, suggests that global warming caused by massive volcanism in India ‘led to dwarfing of all species and a gradual decrease in their diversity beginning 400,000 years prior to the mass extinction.’”

The paper by a Durham University-led team and published in the February issue of GSA Today, reveals that the eruption was almost certainly manmade and caused by the drilling of a nearby exploratory borehole looking for gas, reinforcing the possible explanation in a UN report from July last year.

The team found that two minutes of microwaving on full power killed or inactivated more than 99 percent of bacteria, viruses or parasites, as well as spores, on a kitchen sponge.
