There are some amazing and inspiring science types on Twitter, many of whom have pulled together quite a crowd of followers. With the current craze for twitter lists, I migrated as many as I could from the original scientwists list to the new system, but there’s a limit of 500 per list, so I also categorized them into bio, chem, phys etc.
Interestingly, Listorious now orders list members according to Twitter follower count. It’s not a great metric for ones twitteriness, but it can be useful. So, here’s a list of the Top 32 by followers from the scientwists list, all worth following regardless of by how much store you set twittercount:
Fruit fly brain surgeon, compulsive opinion writer, Co-chair of Gov 2.0 Expo. Voted class pessimist (1993).

Thanks for including me in your Scientwits list (I like that title :-). If it helps valiadate myself a bit further, I used to be a behavioral neuroscientist in my former (academic) life, before moving to the “other side”. Cheers!

No further validation needed. You’re a scientwist through and through ;-)

I re-analyzed the data based on the number of times each is “listed.” I figure that’s a much better metric. If you’re valuable to twitter, you’ll be on more lists, not have a large group of spam followers throwing off the numbers. Here’s the google doc. Probably should have coded something that updated in real time, but I’m lazy ;)

Yes, I was going to do a follow up post based on the number of times people are listed! So thanks for providing the data. Certainly, for those people who don’t block their spam followers (I try to weed them out of my account regularly), this is definitely a better metric, for now…

What would be interesting would be to re-list the list using listed:followercount ratio. I.e. how many times is someone listed divided by their total number of followers; it’s something I thought of previously but it’s discussed here in detail.
It would also give users an incentive to clear out spammers and bots from their followers.
