Water bubbles in space – no soap required!

In an interesting report from NASA’s science news site, we have a wonderful example of why we need humans, not robots, in space! Don Pettit, who has been science officer on the space station since November, was having some fun with bubbles in his free time on a recent Saturday morning. He’d been planning to try making soap bubbles, but first started with pure water, as a control experiment. Much to his surprise, even large-diameter zero-gravity water films were extremely stable, completely unlike their behavior on Earth! The serendipity of the effect led him to a bunch of other experiments to try to analyze the properties of these pure-water “bubble” filmes. Let’s see a robot try that!
