Don’t Miss Tonight’s Leonid Meteor Shower

Set your alarm and get ready for a show. The Leonid Meteor Showers occur every November, but tonight promises to be the best show until 2098. Unlike most encounters with the Leonids (small particles of dust cast off by Comet Tempel-Tuttle on its trip past the sun), in which we see maybe 10 meteors per hour, tonight North Americans can expect to see several hundred per hour and Europeans will see up to 3000 per hour.

The first encounter will be seen over Europe and Africa around 04:30 UT. The second encounter will be seen over North America around 5:30AM EST. Visit NASA’s web site for estimates of best viewing time by location. For more info on tonight’s show, see the article at National Geographic.
