Vader : I, am your father

“I, am your father”

Those words echo in Luke Skywalker’s mind.

His battle with Darth Vader led to the loss of his arm.

Vader. That name is synonymous with pure evil. His menacing presence pervades the galaxy. As The Emperor’s right hand, Vader orchestrated the massacre of the Jedi Order. Vader destroys entire worlds. Literally. Totally merciless. He is reputed to take lives at the slightest annoyance.

Yet Vader spared his life. Why?

“Vader can’t be my father. My father Anakin Skywalker was a Jedi Knight. He fought alongside Old Ben Kenobi in the Clone Wars. He was a hero.”

The dark image of Vader, the Sith Lord, is the complete opposite of his mental image of his father Anakin, the Jedi hero… Yet those words disturb Luke deeply.

————

Darth Vader stared out into space. Deep in thought.

His son. The child Padme carried. Now a Jedi in training. A lot like himself in his younger days. The force is strong with him too.

Padme. His wife. A lifetime ago. They were young and in love. That was his life as Anakin Skywalker. Anakin is dead now. Killed by Obi-wan, his friend.. mentor.. betrayer. A jedi. The lies of the jedi that blinded him then. Their fear of the power that comes with the dark side is pathetic.

He will complete his son’s training, the way it should be. In the dark side of the force. The force potential of father and son will make them invincible. They will overthrow Palpatine and rule the galaxy as father and son, shaping it as they see fit. He will be the Sith Master and his son, the apprentice.

————

“Your father he is.”

Those were the words Yoda said to young Luke Skywalker as he lay there dying of old age. That Darth Vader is Luke’s father. Vader is Anakin Skywalker.

Luke knew what he had to do. In their previous duel, Vader could easily have killed him, yet he clearly was holding back. He could have turned him over to the emperor, but he spared his life.. let him go. Anakin Skywalker, though consumed by the dark side is still there. Somewhere. The goodness in him may be latent, but it exists. He feels it.

————

“He is the chosen one… he will… bring balance… train him!”

Those were Qui-Gon’s dying words to Obi-wan Kenobi about Anakin Skywalker.

Yoda had his doubts.

“The Chosen One the boy may be; nevertheless, grave danger I fear in his training ”

The Jedi Council acknowledged that Anakin Skywalker was the chosen one who would bring balance to the force. After all, he had the greatest force potential in a Jedi. Even greater than Master Yoda.

Anakin Skywalker did tip the scale in an unexpected way. Instead of destroying the Siths, he became a great Sith Lord. Darth Vader. It was the Jedi order that he destroyed.

Ironical isn’t it?
His decision to join the Dark Side, to follow Palpatine was to save Padme from certain death. Those dreams of her dying were premonition of what was to come. The dark side has a power the light side does not. The power to keep a person alive. To cheat death.

“I won’t lose you the way I lost my mother! I’ve become more powerful than any Jedi has ever dreamed of and I’ve done it for you. To protect you. ”
“I’m afraid she died. … it seems in your anger, you killed her.”

The irony. His mentor, Obi-wan betrayed him. Turned Padme against him. His rage led to Padme’s death by his hand.

“You were the Chosen One! It was said that you would, destroy the Sith, not join them. It was you who would bring balance to the Force, not leave it in Darkness.”

Now there is nothing. Only hatred and rage and that suit which is his prison that keeps him alive.

————

They meet again. Father and son. Both powerful in the force. A Sith and a Jedi. Ready to fulfill their destinies.
