Diary See rickyjames commentary at http://www.sciscoop.com/story/2004/1/3/192432/8218 More visual, see picture at http://www3.sympatico.ca/hpohland/docs/Nebra.html especially at the bottom of the page. Note that the moon is not as it is today. Also note on the lower picture, what appears to be a lake. I have yet to find commentary on whether this is a missing piece, the result of damage, or speculation as to what it might have looked like.

Attacking Space, Attacking Time

Diary When I was a kid, my mother wasn't very impressed by most media. "Garbage!" she'd declare, snapping off the TV. "Pabulum."

She said we'd go to the movies, instead. Spielberg and Lucas were all the rage in child circles, but those pictures weren't my mother's cup of tea. So she'd take me down to the Bloor and we'd watch festivals of animation, motley programmes of independent shorts and experimental cartoons.

I thought to my smaller self: wouldn't it cool as ice cream to sit around all day making stuff like that? Wouldn't it be nice to be so silly and craftsy?

And I thought: I'd like to make a short cartoon shown in a festival like this.

So I did.

Diary Cool. The Kasparov vs Deep Junior story by rickyjames is showing up in Google News (you can find it here). As far as I know, this is our first story to appear there.

Diary Last Friday, I went to www.scifi.com and did a bit of a double-take when I saw SFT's Robotics topic logo on their front page. Then I saw that we're their Cool Pick in their Web Guide. Cool.

Diary I had somehow forgotten to include the Physics topic, whose icon I had created months ago. I also just created a new "Cognitive Science" topic. Click on the "topics" menu up top to see the pretty new icons!

Diary Hmm. I just replied to a comment and noticed that the tables are all messed up. I'm not sure why yet. I'll fix it as soon as I can, folks. Until then, you can still reply to comments, the page will just look a little funny.

Diary Sorry, folks. When creating a new account, the confirmation URL that was emailed out was showing up as http://www.scifitoday.com//newuser/confirm. That double backslash in there was a mistake. It should now work. Thanks for your patience.

Submitting new stories
By Drog, Section Diaries
Posted on Mon Nov 18, 2002 at 02:51:55 AM PST

Diary Just a note to anyone interested. I have been submitting stories using my editorial privileges to bypass the moderation queue and post straight to the front page. I expect that I will not need to do this much longer though. Once there are enough SFT participants to moderate the submission queue (choosing which stories get posted) then I will submit stories to the queue just like everyone else. For now, though, I just want to make sure the front page changes frequently during the day.
