SCI-FI-LONDON today launches the WHAT IF...? FILM COMPETITION

The What if..? Film Competition is a UK-wide challenge to young people to make their own short science fiction film. Open to 14-26 year-olds, the competition is free to enter. Entrants have until December 1st, 2004 to deliver their completed short film, lasting no longer than 5 minutes, that poses the question: What if...? In conjunction with Film Education, UK Film Council's First Light Project and the Times Educational Supplement the competition is open to GCSE, A-level and further education students, as well as members of youth clubs and film societies. The competition is divided into three age groups (14-16, 17-19, 20-26 years old) with an overall winner selected from all the entries.

Louis Savy, Festival Director of SCI-FI-LONDON says: "We see the SF genre as a playground for the imagination and aim to encourage students to see that the strength of sci-fi is in its ideas, not just special effects. The What if...? film competition challenges young people to create a story that is compelling and thought-provoking." Prizes include Adobe professional editing software, filmmaking equipment and books. The winning films will receive premiere screenings at the 4th SCI-FI-LONDON film festival in February 2005. The judging panel of filmmakers and industry professionals includes Kieran Breen, Head of Marketing, 20th Century Fox, Dominic Eames, Channel 4 and Dave Golder, editor of SFX magazine.  The panel will select Best Film, Best Direction, Best Story, and Best Technical Achievement from each age group (14-16, 17-19, 20-26) and award an overall prize. For 2005, it has extended its West End run by two more days and takes place from Wed 2nd - Sun 6th February 2005 at the Curzon SOHO and The Other Cinema.  The festival delivers a mix of movies new to the UK as well as a crop of rare classics, short films and events. The 2005 line-up so far includes UK premieres of CUBE ZERO, the third and concluding part of the CUBE (1997) series.  LADY DEATH, a beautifully drawn Animé movie produced in the USA.  ABLE EDWARDS, shot on MiniDV and `made with a Mac'. Apple loved it and featured it as an example of the potential of their Final Cut Pro software - is this the future of desktop cinema?
