For almost a year I have been slaving away at my novel. No one told me writing an epic was alot of trouble, and they didn't need to. Though I just started the actual writing this past spring, I've been planning and storyboarding since last November. I've got 60% of it plotted out, but still it's been hard to get the words on the page. The further I get, the more respect I have for big-time authors and journalists.
In case you're wondering, I started the story in November as a member of NaNoWriMo. I'm a two-time contender, but I've yet to finish a major story. Sure, I've written some short stories, but who reads those these days? Anyway, with my love of reading epics, I decided that's the kind of books I'll write. After that things became difficult. The ideas sure haven't stopped, that's for sure. As I write there are eight other novel ideas that I've already put in motion. Since I do digital artwork as a hobby, I've already come up with cover art for all my stories. You can see them here.
My current story was brought about from my personal philosophy that I came to realize over the past four years. Through the time I've spent in natural settings I've learned that my greatest love is that of nature. Not just the trees and animals but all of it. I was standing on the beach looking out at the ocean, with a clear blue sky overhead, when I realized just how small and insignificant we are compared to this big blue ball we can Earth. All the images of oil spills, smoking factories, and forest fires that I had seen on TV came flooding into my head. It occured to me that we are killing this planet faster than we are killing ourselves. That hit me pretty hard, so much that since then I've been a different person.
The story that I'm doing now is a testament to my feelings: It's about the rise of a revolution in which people take a stand against those that willingly pollute and destroy the very thing that keeps us alive. It may sound corny or silly to some of you, but its a very strong subject for me.
"Eco-Rangers" is the story of three men, from three different time periods, who each have a part to play in the ultimate struggle for ecological peace. There's a war, a holocaust, and a reconstruction. My theme for the story is the power of an idea. One person comes up with the idea. He tells others. Soon there is a group that is dedicated to the idea and motivated to put it into action. Eventually everyone hears of the idea and either acts for it or against it. Is it possible for one, single idea to change the world?? In my opinion it is.
So now I'm within sight of Chapter 3, and I'm wondering if I'll finish my story in time, if ever. More and more people are harping on my ecological idea. "The Day After Tomorrow" suprised me because I didn't think that Hollywood would be willing to bank on something that didn't have sex or guns in it. I was happy with the response (and the sales) the movie got. Maybe there is a place for my story on the bookshelves, and maybe I can inspire other writers to create a new genre: "Ecological Action". Nah, that doesn't sound right. But its still a good idea, right?
