Almost six years ago, a laser blasted several Katyusha rockets out of the sky. Israel has some need for it at the moment.
The Mobile Tactical High Energy Laser (MTHEL) testbed has destroyed mortar rounds, 28 Katyusha rockets and five artillery shells in flight. Unfortunately its development by the United States and Israel has been delayed. It is not scheduled for production until 2009 or 2010. "Defanging Hezbollah: A Directed Energy Defense Could Help" discusses it, and additional links are in my Slashdot journal.
