Quantum Mechanics Accelerates PageRank

Technology Google PageRank (PR) is apparently an important measure of a website's worth, how the Google algorithm actually calculates PR is open to debate and how it impacts on a particular website varies. Now, physicists have turned to quantum mechanics to help them figure out a Schroedinger type pagerank equation for search engines.

One important application that lets us cope with information overload on the web is the PageRank alghorithm.

Computation of this quantity is usually made iteratively with a large use of computational time. Nicola Perra and colleagues now show that PageRank can be expressed in terms of a wave function obeying a Schroedinger-like equation.

The disorder given by the unbalance of outgoing and ingoing links between different web pages, induces a wave function and potential structuring.

This allows them to directly localize the pages with the largest score. Through this new representation they say they can now compute PageRank without iterative techniques.

The method is much faster than standard pagerank algorithms. "Our results also clarify the role of topology in the diffusion of information within complex networks," the researchers say, "The whole approach opens the possibility to novel techniques inspired by quantum physics for the analysis of the WWW properties."

I'm a bit uncertain about a few facts (none / 0) (#1)
by O no mate O poo I A on Fri Aug 29, 2008 at 09:19:48 AM PST
Do you mean to tell me,
That quantum uncertainty
Improves our lot?

How can that be?
It's confusing as all get-out.
This cannot be what life is about.
I demand absolute certainty,
For any other on/off state
Heats the heck out of my pate.
Please continue to reiterate
Or I might just get irate
From a total lack of repetition
For I base all my decisions
On advice from people in costumes.
Unknowable variables do consume
Much of my worthless time
Preventing me from committing the crime
Of independent self-consultation.
For that is merely an abberation.

Free will is totally in contradiction
Of what I receive in pompous diction
Every Sunday of every weak
I prefer to remain meek
And not seek
My own answers.
